Side meeting on combating trafficking in human beings organized by the Belarusian side and IOM in Belarus at the 26th Summer Session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly was held in Minsk on July 6. Within the framework of the forum, Galina Tiurina, member of the Board of the international public association "Gender Perspectives", presented her report.
In her speech, Galina Tiurina noted that since 1999 the problem of human trafficking for NGOs in the Republic of Belarus has become obvious. The case when bodies of two Belarusian women who were sexually exploited and killed by traffickers were returned to the country back was decisive.
Currently, about 12 NGOs work in the country in the areas of assistance to victims of trafficking, prevention and advocacy.
– Of course, there are spheres that should be further worked for the benefit of survivors and promotion safe migration. The first one is further development of National Referral Mechanism. On the national level it is a necessity of creating a single coordinating authority, which would become a forum for discussing pressing issues in combating human trafficking, identifying challenges, developing a strategy for actions and evaluation of national anti-trafficking policies, – said Galina Tyurina.
The expert also stressed that the trends in Belarus are in line with the global trends. The issue of trafficking for labour purposes is raised more often. It is necessary to unite efforts in this direction to identify, redirect and assist victims of labor exploitation.
It should be reminded that the 26th summer session of the OSCE PA was held in Minsk on July 5-9.
